Abigail
Smith Adams
President John Adams
Portrayed by Eloise Berline
The Adams’ lived in Philadelphia until the last few months
of the administration which were spent in the partially completed
“President’s House” in Washington, D.C. The
newly established capital was a dismal village, almost rural.
She organized social events for the for the community with difficulty
and hung her wash in the unfinished audience room because there
was no drying yard. She was a strong individual with interest
in politics, morals, and women’s rights. Many thought she
had the qualifications to be president.
She is wearing a sapphire-blue daytime
gown of heavy Canton crepe. The bodice is fitted and boned with
diagonally-tucked matching satin running from the shoulder to
the basque waistline. The leg of mutton sleeves are cuffed with
neckline lace also seen in the fichu which is caught in front
with a brooch. The straight cut skirt features a twenty-inch border
of Chinese embroidery.
